This lecture explores
two interconnected pillars of effective educational management: teamwork
and leadership. Students will examine how teams function within
educational organizations, what makes them effective, and how different
leadership models influence team performance and school improvement.
Part 1: The Nature of Teams and Team-Building
In the first part of
the session, students will analyze the characteristics of successful teams in
educational settings, including shared goals, trust, clear roles, open
communication, and collaborative problem-solving. We will discuss different
types of teams—teaching teams, cross-functional committees, curriculum groups,
and project teams—and review key models such as Tuckman’s stages of team
development (forming, storming, norming, performing).
Strategies for
effective team-building will be introduced, including role clarification,
fostering psychological safety, conflict management, and building a culture of
collaboration. Practical examples from schools and universities will illustrate
how teams contribute to innovation, curriculum development, and student
support.
Part 2: School Leadership Models
The second part of the
lecture focuses on major school leadership models and how they shape
organizational culture and team dynamics. Students will explore models such as
instructional leadership, transformational leadership, distributed leadership,
servant leadership, and systems leadership. Each model will be analyzed in
terms of its core principles, strengths, and limitations.
We will examine how
leadership styles influence teacher motivation, decision-making, professional
learning communities, and overall school performance. Case studies will
highlight how effective leaders use appropriate leadership approaches to
empower teams, support change, and cultivate a shared vision.
By the end of the lecture, students will:
- Understand how teams operate and why
teamwork is essential in education
- Recognize the stages and dynamics of
team development
- Identify strategies for building
effective, collaborative teams
- Compare major school leadership models
and understand their impact on practice
- Be able to link leadership approaches
with team-building and school improvement
